Clunk, Click Every Trip! Perhaps one of the best remembered seat belt campaigns, sadly fronted by the now discredited sex pest Jimmy Savile, but it did at the time get the message over, so leaving the Savile issue aside, motorists who risk their own lives and the lives of their passengers by failing to clunk, click, a seatbelt are now the target of a month-long campaign.
Throughout the month of March, Cambridgeshire Police officers will be doing highly targeted stop checks to catch those motorists failing to wear a seatbelt.
Last year in 2012, more than 2700 people received an unwelcome £60 fine for failing to wear a seatbelt.
The campaign in March is part of the national 'Think' campaign to raise awareness of the vital importance of wearing seatbelts.
PC Stephen Gedny, Casualty Reduction Officer, said: "A seatbelt is a life-saving device, it astonishes me that there are still people out there who fail to buckle up.
"Putting your seatbelt on should be part of your routine before even starting your vehicle, and drivers should be responsible for ensuring all passengers wear theirs.
"Over the next few weeks officers will be carrying out targeted patrols to catch those failing to wear a seatbelt.
"Ideally we do not want to catch anyone and would urge motorists to ensure they wear a seatbelt when driving."
