Not good news for Peterborough, or the eastern region in general, as the PCS union leader Mark Serwotka confirmed on Sky News (Sunday Morning Murnaghan) he is in talks with other unions and the TUC about staging a 24-hour general strike.
Asked if he was talking with other union leaders about a general strike, PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka told Murnaghan on Sky News:
"We are definitely having a discussion about generalised strike action. It is the beginnings of a much more detailed discussion between unions who have real industrial issues in front of them now and about coordinating efforts to ensure that our attempts to fight back and defend our members is more effective.

"My own opinion is that what the Government is doing is getting so increasingly unpopular that even a 24-hour strike involving millions of people across the economy would be an incredibly important moment. It would show that people can fight back, and say we don't just have to accept our lot."
Clearly if the unions do go ahead with a 24-hour general strike, its not the time that the 'workers have downed tools" but the longer term multiple process disruption, a general strike causes, and at very little direct financial cost to the unions, as opposed to unions engaged in strikes which run on for weeks, they have to pay out strike pay to their members, thus a drain on union financial resources.
When a general strike is called, it affects many processes totally unconnected with the direct action of the strikers, goods, trains, freight containers will be out of place and in many 'just in time' component and freight deliveries, the delay and disruption could stretch into weeks, causing some time critical or short shelf life manufacturing processes to close down. In addition materials already inward bound by sea and air will have to be offloaded from ships and cargo aircraft. Something that won't be happening if the strike becomes a reality.
