now on the cusp of a full six inches..
All councillors attending the meeting today Monday discussing the future of the core City Centre for Peterborough would be well advised to listen to the BBC player replay of the Monday BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Paul Stainton Breakfast Show (that is if you can tear yourself away from the Town Hall Pravda Pop-up Radio Peterbuurragh: Prop Cllr. Wayne Fitzgeralds' dabs on da decks..)
The budget constrained planning numpty up for the council, has breathtakingly stupidly suggested that cars would be excluded from the city centre, and rat run Bourges Boulevard would be chopped up with street level pedestrian crossing points, as the obvious solution an 'unter strasse' (see what we did there????) pedestrian tunnel would be too expensive, and as all future developments are reliant on a massive 75% being stumped up by future developers. Could however be easily financed if the underground pedestrian tunnel, had a line of small retail boutique kiosk units for rental along one or both sides.
Meaning in effect the Oakham Ales Brewery Tap Brew Pub is also probably safe for another 50 plus years ie see us all out!. Sigh.
Any new developers plan for Peterborough City Centre would NOT include a Queensgate Mark II style shopping mall (the original is in any case is up for sale - empty units and all - as the owners wish to put all new future investment into their Birmingham properties - on the HS2 railway route.
HS2 according to a KPMG report will cost Peterborough some £65 million in lost inward investment. You can see why, the HS2 line could not be further away from Peterborough) 'as the lire seems to have dropped' and the dear leader (obviously covertly reading back editions of the PBROTRIB as we have been relentlessly banging on about this, for a couple of years now) has suddenly realised that online shopping has taken over from endless shopping malls. We do after all have a huge Amazon.com depot on our patch...
Now shopping malls are usually filled during the cold winter months with OAPs eating sandwiches and balancing Thermos flasks on their knees trying to stave off hypothermia as their houses are unheated due to soaring Energy bills - experts say Energy retail companies will continue to hike up domestic bills at around 10% to 18% per year .... they don't mall shop either...
Social housing isn't a significant feature of the future town centre development plan, according to the radio broadcast.
It is well known that any new business or enterprise 'on the cusp' of setting up in Peterborough, first has to run it through Cllr Marco Sopranos office. (He told us this several years back, over a cup of Earl Grey...) Why on earth would anyone wishing to invest substantial funds in this City, want to confide with a 'short-term' political leader (up for re-election soon) and the chairman of an ENERGY COMPANY? Which of course is one of the dear leaders many day jobs....The Energy Companies in all forms have taken over from MP's (with some exceptions - ED) and journalists, as the most hated sector in the UK. Amen to that....
And don't forget to tune into BBC Parliament Channel tomorrow Tuesday November 5th at 11am for the great LIVE Peterborough Solar farm debate.
Councillors will also need to take into account that the majority of drivers of brand new cars in this city, are are in fact disabled. As the demographic gets older - the post war bulge babies now in their 70's - these numbers will greatly increase. They also drive new cars on mobility hire contracts, their disability mobility benefit pays for the cost of the monthly contract hire, and these vehicles are changed every three years.
So the planners idea that cars would be excluded from the centre, is crass mindless stupidity, and will see the central core decine at a much faster rate, if his idea has any merit. As it is, the safety aspect of the City centre after 4pm, with continuing high levels of street crime, muggings - higher than in the back streets of Rome - (as reported recently in the PBROTRIB by the departing Police Inspector Glazebrook) and in the evening (well Thursday to Saturday) running the gauntlet of night club vomit alley - as featured for evermore through repeats on TV's COP SQUAD.
The poor financial returns from the Bill Kenwright Broadway Theatre season so far, suggested by VIVAcity again unlawfully passing personal data protected membership information to a commercial organisation for yet another repeat mailing thudding on the mat today - is a fair indicator.
Amazingly the current theatre owner sold off the adjacent theatre car park !!!! The idea of any new mutiplex cinema in the centre, now renamed by wags as PIZZABURRA, is also a non starter and will again be reliant on car access - as the council has all but done away with a safe reliable night bus service. Some areas not served at all after 6pm. Besides until the present owner of the Broadway acquired the Broadway deep discounted property as a distress sale. The Broadway Big Screen and Theatre as it was called, had the largest cinema screen (and sixteen channels of surround sound) outside of the West End of London. The screen being on a slideaway giant railway track. It was ripped out shortly after Mr Fasulo took control, although he publicly promised at the time to maintain the cinema option.... hmmmm.
