During the recent Council meeting, Cllr John Shearman presented a petition signed by some 180 Peterborough residents pleading with the City Council to renegotiate the Stagecoach contract in order to support the older members of the community living in Garton End Road.
Cllr John Shearman has asked that a number of Stagecoach Route 2 buses be re-routed along Elmfield Road and Garton End Road, as the current arrangements effectively leave a cluster of senior citizens marooned in their houses, the bus stop being too far away, and impossible to reach for anyone with limited mobility. The request is currently being considered by Council Officers.
Cllr Shearman commented: 'I am confident Council officers will work for the best interests of Peterborough residents and not for those of Stagecoach if they refuse to enter into negotiations'.
The council is facing a £15 million 'blackhole' in its finances within five years, has embarked on a savage cost cutting programme. Bus services were a major casualty with long established operators being chopped at the beginning of October, with many experienced local link bus drivers being made redundant, and an all inclusive deal struck with Stagecoach. New restricted timetables were introduced, with some double deck larger bus units replacing low level single deck buses, effectively preventing the larger buses from entering smaller back roads and residential enclaves.
