When Stewart Jackson MP, finally has a reality check, hopefully before the Westminster party senior Tory grandees call him in to have a serious discussion about his own future; or the penny drops that MPs (and councillors) actually work for us, and are paid generously to do so out of taxpayer generated public funds; and that we do not work for them. Put another way opens a meaningful DAILY dialogue with his fellow Conservative the Dear Leader Marco Cereste; then we might actually get somewhere.
The two, like a couple of naughty schoolboys have apparently not been seen together or met for some 6 months or so. We would not have known, had Mr Jackson not boastfully tweeted and written about it. He sees it as a badge of honour. Good Grief! Wacco Jacco still blocks us (and seemingly most of Peterborough) from his Twitter feed, but we still see them immediately they are published and all the rapidly deleted ones as well.
This is so dysfunctional, the two even belong to the same Political Party - the Conservative part of the Coalition! Any other MP and Council Leader, would be professional, and virtually joined at the hip, in and out of each others offices, almost on a daily basis. Sadly we've had two duff MPs in succession in this particular seat, what is going on? The two can hate each other in private, but in public and professionally, both are taking various forms of payment from the public purse and are supposed to be working for the good of this City.
Make no mistake, the County Council and Cambridge City in particular - now in Labour hands - are both having a bl**dy good laugh at our expense, creaming off all the EC and UK Grants going, and have a very effective professional lobby organisation tapping up all major business and parliamentary sources. No one is doing this for Peterborough as the Opportunity Peterborough Chief Executive Neil Darwin jumped ship last month and is now Director - Enterprise and Skills at GCGP Enterprise
Simon Machin the PCC Director of Growth etc etc is the executive also seemingly helping to close down this City, reducing the main thoroughfare FOR A WHOLE YEAR to a single lane either way. Sheer madness. Have a look at his current LinkedIn professional entry to see exactly what we mean.
The point being, the financial thumbscrews are now being rapidly tightened on this small vulnerable Unitary Authority. We need others INTERNATIONALLY to take us seriously. All the spin in the world about environment capital, blue sky thinking, public realm, Britains fastest growing City, posh new offices for outsourced council workers and grandiose automated warehouse projects, just underlines how distant and remote from hard pressed debt laden local residents, the executive really is; and to hard working people generally, just how out of touch with reality all this is.
Every other City in the UK is making an extra special effort to grab a share of any inward investment, new businesses, new manufacturing industry and service industries to kickstart future expansion. Making their city or town a welcoming, attractive proposition. What are we doing? The truth is very little, apart from a few pet projects.
Elsewhere in this blog we catalogue the distressingly long list of council cock ups, overspends, services chopped and elderly residents kicked out of care homes, childrens centres closed down and our residents shuttled around like delivery packages from Amazon. But sweetheart deals and over generous pay packages are being handed out and showered on the chosen few like confetti. Failure is being rewarded.
The PBROTRIB would dearly like to report success and lots of good news, but it has to be based on fact, mutual trust and transparency. With some goodwill and a mountain of luck it can be done. Messrs Jackson and Cereste can start by burying the hatchet, and set out a series of round table meetings, to include our other hard working MP Shailesh Vara.
But before they all meet up, they might like to read this from The New York Times :
