The results on May 22nd may not have pleased many amongst the opposition, but I see the result as an amazing opportunity.
There was much talk prior to the election about the necessity for the cabinet system to be abolished and for a cross party committee to be introduced to our city, which would mean that the people of Peterborough are fairly represented when big decisions are being made. This would also contribute to further transparency and reduce [alleged] corruption amongst the political system. Though the opposition hold just a mere 1% majority, this could now become achievable....but will it?
Rather than parties investing their time attacking each other, point scoring and game playing, focus must now be on the what matters to those they represent.
To achieve the two main objectives that are essential for the people in Peterborough (to remove current leadership and see the return of a cross party committee) our Councillors MUST work together.
This opportunity to make positive change for our city cannot be missed. It HAS to be acted upon. I implore all those Councillors who have their integrity intact to fight for the right of the people of Peterborough to have a fair and transparent political system. Fight those that oppose you and expose them. Time to blow the whistle!
VINCE PARKER comments:
With the ' First Past the Post' system, a manoeuvre undertaken by the 'majority' party to bolster up their numbers has always been to simply increase their support by creating more posts in appropriate districts.
We now have too many MP's to even fit them all on the benches of the House of Commons !
No wonder our European neighbours laugh whenever we mention the word 'democracy'.
As in national government, so in local government !
Peterborough now has too many Councillors, and no prizes for guessing how this came about !
The Peterborough City Council's website shows that we presently have 57 councillors, while our near neighbour, the Nottingham City unitary authority, which has a population half as big again as Peterborough, manages quite nicely with just 55 councillors.
Not only that, but these 55 'representatives of the people' in Nottingham appear to be doing a much better job than our massed ranks of councillors ...
It's enough to make me see red ! (PUN INTENDED!)
Once more, I propose that reform of the council should be given 'top priority'.
Action is needed now, without any delay, to stop the ongoing and incontrovertible loss and wastage of public funds .
Even our Conservative MP continues to publicly criticise the 'errors of bad judgement' that have cost and continue to cost the City so much !
As I have previously mentioned :
"Our archaic, First Past the Post system is no longer an acceptable way to choose who will run today's society. Peterborough City Councillors should be appointed in proportion to the votes that have been cast, just as Euro MPs are".
Simple arithmetic would indicate that 40 councillors, 'proportionately appointed' by democratic election, would be an ample number to perform the civic duties that the city requires of them, while representing the intentions of the voters that put them there.
Not only that, it would save the city money, too !
