FROM twitter: RT @BBCr4today: Allowing a dictator to remain in power can sometimes be the lesser of two evils - General Tim Cross #r4today
|To you Squire, say no more, seven grand a head,|
and I'll throw in a lorryload of political cauliflowers and the odd turnip...
What a busy night and morning as the enormity of the Peterborough Central Labour Party and now the LIB DEMS decision to jointly formally back Conservative Council Leader Marco Cereste to keep his position at the head of the no overall control Peterborough City Council (ie not a vote but more a Coronation. Labour councillors will 'sit on their hands' but will have the effect of the Dear Leader keeping tight hold of the chalice ). We repeat the Dear Leader voted in as Leader of the debt laden NOC Peterborough City Council, at least until the General Election in May next year.
The decision in the cold light of day, can however be looked at in two ways, either it is pure folly and certain political suicide or Nazim Khan, the Labour supremo in Peterborough, is a canny Svengali of political strategy, as he wants Conservative Cllr. Marco Cereste, to be even in electoral defeat, to be ever closely associated with the huge eyewatering council mounting debt spiral of some £96 million.. the latter now seems to be the right view.
Clearly if Marco Cereste was deselected on Monday as Leader, he could legitimately walk (run?) away from the debt mountain, wash his hands of the whole issue, and lay all the blame during his re-election campaign in April next year, at the foot of who ever stepped into the role.
So either it is a betrayal of all grass roots party members and voters in the Labour and LibDem local parties, or a stunning piece of political foreplay. But whichever way you look at it; the going rate to 'buy' a councillor is now publicly set at £7 thousand pounds of taxpayers money, seemingly borrowed at the local authority rate of 4% per annum.
We wish Cllr Nick Thurlbourn (Lab. Fletton), if he confirms it, good luck in his new committee role with his new political friends and that he can put the £7 thousand pounds that comes with it, for hopefully attending a few meetings, to good use ....
A later source physically in the meeting claims that the PBROTRIB canny svengali theory is the right line to take, apparently the local party won't be voting for or against Marco Cereste to keep his position, but simply abstaining and will be 'sitting on their hands'. Which to a right thinking person with an abacus will calculate that by abstaining, the dear leader will continue to rule.
The other vote outcome is that Cllr Thurlbourn is now appointed, the Peterborough Central Labour Party Press Officer and Deputy Leader of the Central Labour Party.... he IS going to be busy... just to clear up a point on leaks from inside the Central Labour Party, it isn't one single source, but several. 'No longer a party of protest but delivery' is to be the new tribal chant. Hmm, seems to have been infiltrated by the LibDems as well!
We also hear from a few sources, that Mrs Thurbourn, who failed to get elected this year, was rumoured to be keen to run against Marco Cereste.... is that still now the position? Calls on the usual number, apologies to anyone calling yesterday, Virginmedia closed down all their telephone lines yesterday morning from 7:30am for a period of four hours...
