Peterborough and the 'Royal Scot' route
at the heart of his thinking...
This latest bulletin from the RMT Union (scroll down) is actually good for the City of Peterborough and the future of the East Coast Main Line, as it seems the grand rail schemes trumpeted by the Government last week might not have been properly costed, if costed at all!
As East Coast the publicly owned railway operator working the East Coast Main Line is actually making shedloads of money for HM Treasury; Labour might find it prudent to roll out the DOR model as other private contracts lapse or some may be handed in early. It might be considered nationalisation by stealth but if it actually works, we can clearly adapt the model. It could well be a mixture of Private and DOR.
What Peterborough needs to do is ask Ms Beasley to step aside and to rapidly hire in a very tough, commercially savvy Chief Executive, someone who is able to professionally stand up to Cllr Marco Cereste, to bring him and Central Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson to the same negotiating table, and in the same team, so we are properly represented at Westminster, rather than sweeping up the crumbs from the County Council table and borrowing to 'invest' in madcap offshore investment adventures...think ICELAND!
Local Labour, LibDems and the Inde's having given up any pretence of an effective united Opposition, some 'opposition' councillors even taking allowance padded positions handed out by the Dear Leader. We as citizens ( well the third of the voting population who actually bothered to vote), certainly didn't want NO OVERALL CONTROL !
The PBROTRIB is running the RMT statement in full, if you leave out the usual fruity rhetoric, the Union has uncovered several good points, these should be seriously considered by all parties. Top of the list is totally rethinking the HS2/3/4 omnishambles. The City of Peterborough deserves better ....
RMT slams Government over electrification in North
RAIL UNION RMT has slammed the Government after concerns about funding for a key rail modernisation scheme were raised by Transport Select Committee
RAIL UNION RMT has slammed the Government after concerns about funding for a key rail modernisation scheme were raised by the Commons Transport Select Committee chair Louise Ellman who was quoted as saying that there were "all kinds of question marks" surrounding the Northern electrification programme.
The comments came after a number of senior rail bosses, and Whitehall's rail "supremo" Clare Moriarty, gave evidence to the Transport Select Committee at which they were forced to admit that the exact total cost of some major rail schemes, including the northern electrification, was still to be decided upon.
Despite promises from the Government that the scheme, which would lead to the long-awaited electrification of the route from Manchester to Leeds and York, would be completed by the end of 2018 it has now emerged that the costing process will not be completed until March next year and that if costs fall outside of budgets the entire programme will have to be reconsidered.
Rail bosses and officials were unable to give the Transport Select Committee an absolute and categorical assurance that the scheme will now go ahead as planned
Mick Cash, RMT acting general secretary said:
“This is shocking news. Only last week chancellor George Osborne was parading around talking about a High Speed link in the North and yet today we can't even get a cast iron assurance on the urgent electrification programme in the region that it was assumed would be completed in the next four years. This is further evidence of the continuing shambles on our railways which is down to a combination of sheer ministerial incompetence and the fragmentation of privatisation.
“Coming hot on the heels of the Government’s launch of a consultation that would destroy jobs, service and safety on both Northern Rail and Trans Pennine Express this is another hammer blow to rail services in the North and will provoke widespread anger amongst staff and the public alike. RMT will be using this latest betrayal as we step up our campaign to defend rail services and rail jobs.”
