Nothing like flogging a dead horse and this one is a beauty. The PBROTRIB has devoted acres of space to the sorry state of our local bus services, and how even short routes take 45 minutes to complete a 14 mile journey. Some spotty faced PR person has issued a challenge to hard pressed Peterborians to leave their cars at home for a week and use public transport to get around the city.
Nothing wrong with that but holding herself hostage to fortune, is someone we thought had a sensible head on her shoulders Councillor Lucia Serluca, the grandly entitled Cabinet Member for City Centre Management, Culture and Tourism for Peterborough City Council, by giving public transport a go and her car a rest.
The PR Department say they are promoting Public Transport Week, which itself is part of the Travelchoice campaign, Lucia Serluca hopes to demonstrate how many journeys can be made using the bus and train, also how often we could leave our cars at home, by keeping a travel diary of her progress, tweeting highlights throughout the week on @PeterboroughCC .
The PBROTRIB thinks it would have been more impressive if Marco Cereste joined the challenge and left his own 'black beast' at home for a week. Fat chance of that!
In addition to bigging up the antics of Councillor Serluca, the council is also blowing yet more borrowed public funding organising, they say, "a range of events to encourage use of public transport and raise awareness of the services on offer throughout the city." The programme is so dire it deserves wide publicity, as ever we are more than happy to help!
It should also be mentioned this takes place just as the UK's second largest Beer Festival hits town... if they just re-instated the local bus service as was, then no real need for this nonsense.. hit the link to see what we mean..
On Tuesday 19th August commuters and shoppers are invited to take part in the Deal or No Deal public transport giveaway. (Just hope they've properly cleared copyright with the owners of the TV show! Could be messy and not to mention very expensive).
Prizes on offer include free tablet computers, bikes, Nike fuel bands and bus tickets. These all can be won between 12pm and 4pm at the Queensgate Shopping Centre. Anybody with a valid public transport travel ticket for Tuesday can join in.
On Wednesday 20th August local business people can attend a Business Bus Day to learn more about commuting and receive free dayrider and megarider tickets for use throughout the city.
On Saturday 23rd August Railworld and Nene Valley Railway are opening their doors free of charge to anybody that wants to visit by public transport. Simply show your valid ticket to enjoy all the facilities and events on offer. Any cyclist that takes their bike along can also have it security marked for free.
Councillor Serluca said: "I'm looking forward to demonstrating how easy it is to get around Peterborough by public transport and don't think it should pose too much of a challenge.
"You can follow my progress on the Peterborough City Council facebook page and twitter account @PeterboroughCC.
"Although this is just a bit of fun I would encourage everybody to give public transport a go and help keep a few extra cars off our streets."
