We are getting reports that some older people and particularly people in sheltered accommodation in Peterborough, who have repeat NHS prescriptions, are suddenly being electronically transferred to a chemist chain they have not specifically nominated. It gets worse, where a named chemist has been nominated, the instruction via the new NHS Electronic Prescription service is being routinely ignored as the Doctors' computer terminal, won't allow the selected independent chemist to be used for the dispensing of NHS and private drugs. This sometimes results in a 'strange' chemist delivery driver knocking at your door.
It seems that the new FREE NHS Electronic Prescription Service designed to do away with paper prescriptions, and provide the Government and the NHS with an immediate computer generated cost-slashing audit of items dispensed; has only been rolled out so far; to certain large Chemist chains such as the Co-op and Boots.
Smaller Independent Pharmacies, such as Halls the Chemist are, in the new electronic process being sidelined, but now Halls and other independents are fighting back, with an easy to complete instruction sheet designed to ensure older patients wishes are properly carried out and that any drugs are dispensed and delivered only by the chemist of their choice.
The advantage of using Halls the Chemist for example, is they regularly beat the delivery times of the larger chains, and if the medication is not available at one branch, they will automatically send a van round to their other branches, to immediately source the missing items.
To access the electronic service at your local surgery. A Halls registration form needs to be filled in, they will send it to your doctor on your behalf so the confidential electronic link can be set up, and no paper prescriptions will be required as the instructions from your doctor will already be with the chemist within seconds.
If you are at all concerned that you or your loved ones are not properly included on the new NHS electronic system, then phone Halls in Stanground on 01733 311611 and they'll deliver a registration form to you and assist you in its completion.
Alternatively the website is at www.hallsthechemist.co.uk Other independent chemists are also available.
