We welcomed the Cambridgeshire Branch of the National Union of Journalists to Peterborough last night, many thanks to The Brewery Tap for laying on the facility. The weather outside was cold and disgusting, the type of fine drizzle that gets in everywhere. It was good to hear that Branch membership is expanding, and we added a few distinguished names as they have transferred in from London.

As I left the meeting at around 10:15 pm I noticed an orderly queue of people at a soup kitchen set up in the car park behind the Tap. I only mention this, as the council rigidly maintain there are only 7 rough sleepers in the City. Sadly there are clearly many more. The evidence is in that car park every night.
It suits councillors to downplay the numbers of rough sleepers, as we are already in the run up to the elections. Newspapers suggest that within a few weeks we could be facing the coldest winter on record. Rather than trying to cover up the number of homeless people in this City, perhaps Mrs Beasley should suggest council officers leave their overheated offices, get their coats on and start distributing some sleeping bags, and make some of the currently empty council offices/warehouses available as an overnight shelter? Failure to do so could see a number of body bags being stacked up at the City Hospital before Christmas.
On another matter, the combination of rain droplets on car windscreens reflecting the 'not fit for purpose' LED street lighting now throughout the City (the flicker or LED emitting rate is way too low say experts) can easily create glare for drivers, over the age of 50.
The astonishing advice from the USA is to drive, at night, with your sun visor down, to eliminate the direct glare emissions from the new lights. I tried it last night and it helps, cannot put it better than that, especially if you wear varifocals! So take greater care if you drive after dark. We have repeatedly advised councillors and officers over the drawbacks associated with this poorly specified (ie cheap) LED street lighting system, but they sit on their hands.
