There is a major £3 MILLION NEW BLACK HOLE row brewing in Peterborough Town Hall today (Thursday), as we hear from usually reliable sources within Town Hall that an astonishing £3 million miscalculation has been uncovered relating to the Fletton Parkway Interchange urgent works programme.
The gaff is likely to be public within a few days, but follows a rapidly convened high level staff meeting of officers in the Town Hall. Some left the meeting so angry, they leaked the details to ensure 'the fingers were pointing in the right direction'. The council has no option but to finance the missing £3 million.... later media reports suggest the council liability is possibly some £2 million more, although a proportion of the extra spend may be recovered leaving a core £3 million shortfall.Whatever the final figure is, it shows an astonishing level of complacency by project engineers.
The Officer said to be concerned is Simon Machin, the council's so called director of growth and regeneration (not sums), who seems to be setting himself up as the local Aunt Sally for a variety of wacky projects that seem to be lacking credence in the budgeting department, and others that just seem to fall apart.
The slow pace of the 'office hours' only Borges Boulevard works current wrecking City businesses springs to mind. How Mr Machin wriggles out of this one, will say insiders, be a masterclass in 'obfuspeak'
The problem for the council is that the money will have to be found, and rubbishes the recent budget computation; it again calls into question the lack of a clued up hard hitting finance director/chief executive.
