We had a report this morning from a resident in Orton Brimbles advising that she had received a telephone call stating that her card had been used to purchase a jumper from a store and that they had caught the person responsible. The male gave the name of a DC Robert Lawrence and a collar number along with a crime number and that she had to ring 999 and speak to someone regarding her cards.
The quick thinking lady realised that something was not right and tried to ring a friend but the call would not connect and thankfully she was able to use her intercom system to raise the alarm.
This scam has been occurring all around the country and a recent BBC report advised that scammers had reportedly netted million of pounds from it. They use the above or will also say that a fraud has been committed on your bank account and suggest the resident calls their bank to confirm their details.
When the resident calls up to ring the police or their bank as instructed, the caller does not terminate the call and stays on the line and, as a result without realising it, the residents starts talking to the fraudster again thinking they have called their bank or the police. During the conversation the offender says he will need to examine the victim's bank card (or something of a similar nature) and the recent scam involved a courier being sent to collect the card and pin number.
- - If you ever have doubts about someone phoning you, hang up and ensure the line has been terminated. BT suggest leaving the line for approximately 5 minutes before you redial.
- - Banks or Police will never ask for PIN or card details over the phone and you should NEVER give these details out
- - Never give your bank cards over to anyone at your door even if they sound and appear to be legitimate
- - Report any incident of this nature via 101. You can also report via Action Fraud on 0300 1232040.
Please spread the word.
