As Cambridgeshire Police have confiscated literally warehouse loads of cannabis growing lights, due to a highly effective war against the criminal farmers; we like this positive idea for some community use of the kit rather than dumping it. The so called Community Stadium ie London Road traditionally had a pitch flooding problem, could this be an ideal community use?
Or keep the Christmas space frame rig in Cathedral Square and string up all the lights so Peterborians deprived of Vitamin D can bask in artificial sunshine, bringing the fabled City Centre public realm just that bit closer to the aim of creating a downtown Rome.... Either way hopefully Police will now have an outlet for the confiscated lighting equipment.
The lights, which stimulate growth by mimicking the effects of the sun, were seized when cops raided a cannabis farm containing about 500 plants.
But instead of binning the lights, they were given to Leeds Rhinos, who have now used them to improve the quality of the pitch at Headingley Carnegie Stadium in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
The plan to give the lights a new crime-free purpose was devised by PC Kevin Hussey, of the Leeds inner North West neighbourhood policing team.
He said: ‘We already have an excellent relationship with Leeds Rhinos and they have worked with us on a number of community initiatives with schools and young people over the years.
‘When I found that we could donate equipment seized from cannabis farms to local groups I discussed it with their head groundsman to see how we might be able to help them out.
‘Previously we would have to pay to hire skips to dispose of all the equipment but this way we can save money and see something that criminals have been using in the illegal drugs trade put to a positive use in the local community.’
