He is to assume the role from Alastair Lyons, stepping down from the gaff prone services company and government contractor, after a series of operational and financial irregularities.
Sir Roys current boardroom roles include a non-executive directorship at William Hill, ( which will put him a loggerheads with Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson who wants to clear the bookies from central Peterborough). He will serve alongside its chief executive, Rupert Soames, who was parachuted in last year amid fears for the company's survival.
Serco investors, have watched the shares collapse as the shares have been beset by profit warnings, fraud inquiries and, more recently, a rescue rights issue, raising £555m.
Serco, was also banned from winning new Government contracts, after it emerged that some work monitoring prisoners "had been billed for erroneously". Serco repaid tens of millions of pounds to central Government .
