EXCLUSIVE: ED MURPHY EXPELLED

Cllr. Ed Murphy formally expelled from Peterborough Central Labour Party.






The Pbrotrib expected all kinds of fallout within the Central Peterborough Labour Party but not for a moment did we ever think the labour group would hold what we can only term a 'kangaroo court' to expel or get rid of one of their own Ed Murphy, on the grounds that he broke the rules about standing for Labour!





Confused? Its being claimed that Cllr Lisa Forbes wasn't telling the whole story to Chris Mann on BBC Cambridgeshire and anyone else who would listen. Part of the exchange taken from the www.newlistener.co.uk website is highlighted in red below, to read it all hit the link .


This is what we understand so far:


Lisa Forbes backed by the Unison union, Peterborough City Councillor and Labour Party parliamentary candidate for Peterborough was 'economical with the truth' as it now seems that the Labour Group forced or 'whipped' the decision to vote only for Cllr Jamil for Leader of the Council and in effect second Cllr Jamil at the Peterborough City Council Meeting.


This all happened some two days before Cllr Holdich became the Leader of the Council  but that was not the story Lisa Forbes  suggested on BBC Radio.




Cllr John Shearman took to social media and tweeted about the disgraceful behaviour of a Labour Councillor, which is taken to mean Cllr Jo Johnson, who tried for a vote of no confidence in the Leader. as the whip was effectively broken. Cllr Jamil refusing to put himself forward. 


Cllr Ed Murphy watching this disaster unfolding, then as the whip was no longer in force, effectively null and void, put himself up as a candidate for the Leadership and was getting some support from opposition groups. This type of arrangement happens in Westminster so nothing out of the ordinary.


The Peterborough Central Labour Party meeting will attempt to use Eds tweets as evidence, but if they look at the timeline. Ed Murphys tweets were published before the whip was in place- some two weeks before - the whip was applied. Once Cllr Jamil was selected by the Peterborough Central Labour Party.






The meeting held tonight by the Labour Group has one item on the agenda and that, insiders say, is to expel Ed Murphy. At a time when the Labour Party in Peterborough should be patching up any split in an effort to make themselves ideal election material, seems a strange way to go about matters. It also calls into question the veracity of Cllr Lisa Forbes who according to sources changed the story for the radio and local Petertorygraph newspaper.

CHRIS MANN: I know that you’re the Deputy Leader of the Labour Group on Peterborough City Council. A bit of an embarrassment the other night, where you didn’t tell a candidate going forward to be Leader on the Council. What happened?
LISA FORBES: Well it was a difficult night to be fair. What happened was after the local elections we nominate officers for the posts. And we’ve got quite a few new officers in place. And it’s a short time between the actual elections, our Group meeting to nominate officers for the future, and than the Full Council meeting. It all happened within a week. So we didn’t have very long to sort of communicate with each other what was happening. And we also knew, which is what the Leader Jamil said, was we knew that we didn’t have the numbers on the night either. Quite a few of the opposition councillors, the independents, were saying what a great job councillor Holdich would do. So we weren’t going to win the vote. We knew that.
