Troubled 'Peterborough' based holiday group Thomas Cook has appointed a former Sky TV director of corporate communications Alice Macandrew to the new Thomas Cook group communications director role. The move signals the intention to move Thomas Cooks' key management and executive functions to its London headquarters, with a possible reduction in the Peterborough headcount.

Alice Macandrew

Alice Macandrew, is used to troubleshooting and crisis management issues, regarded as close to James Murdoch as an advisor ( appointed in 2008 ), however she quit News Corporation after a disagreement, in the way the phone-hacking scandal was being handled, she then re-emerged at BSkyB.

The company earlier issued a statement: Thomas Cook Group plc has appointed Alice Macandrew as the new Group Communications Director of the company. She joins on 3 November 2015 and reports to CEO Peter Fankhauser.

Alice will assume responsibility for the planning and execution of Group  internal and external communications strategy across all channels including PR, Social Media, Government Affairs and CSR.

Alice Macandrew has held senior executive roles with leading media organisations Sky and News Corporation. She was previously a Partner at Finsbury.

After fulfilling his commitment to support Peter Fankhauser in his first year as CEO and to rebuild and strengthen the London-based Group & UK Communications function, Mathias Brandes will return, as planned, to his native Germany in the New Year. There, he will assume the role as Head of Communications, Continental Europe, responsible for internal and external communications for the East/West and Central Europe segments, reporting to Alice Macandrew.

Peter Fankhauser comments:

"I’m delighted to welcome Alice to the Group in her new role. She brings skills and experience, especially in the UK media environment, that will be hugely valuable as we enter the next stage of our transformation. Implementing our new operating model to become a truly customer-centric organisation will need strong communication to all our stakeholders and I am looking forward to working with Alice on this exciting journey.

"Mathias has been a great support to me personally and I thank him sincerely for his dedication during this challenging year for the Group. In his new role we will benefit from his knowledge of the Continental markets and the travel business as a whole and I am happy to have a strong communication lead on the Continent."
