January edition of the Crime and Policing News Update.
There have been several announcements in January demonstrating the government’s commitment to deliver and accelerate greater joint working between police forces and fire and rescue services.
On 26 January, the government announced that it will bring in legislation to enable Police and Crime Commissioners to take on responsibility for fire services at local level. This follows a public consultation which sought views on how to enable greater collaboration between the emergency services.
On 5 January the Prime Minister announced that the Home Office would take over responsibility for fire policy from the Department for Communities and Local Government.
Mike Penning has now become the Minister for Policing, Fire, Criminal Justice and Victims. These announcements will enable a radical transformation of how the police and fire and rescue services work together, and you can read more about them in the news update.
On 5 January the Prime Minister also announced further changes to Home Office Ministers’ portfolios.
Security Minister John Hayes has assumed responsibility for serious and organised crime and the Minister for Minister for Preventing Abuse, Exploitation and Crime,
Karen Bradley, is now responsible for the Crime Prevention Strategy, wildlife crime, and acquisitive crime, and the drug and alcohol policy areas.
A new Director-General for the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism was appointed on 21 January. Thomas Hurd replaces Charles Farr, who has recently been appointed as the new Chair of the Joint Intelligence Committee.
Mr. Hurd will begin work in April and will be responsible for the Government’s strategy, policy and legislative response to the threats of terrorism and organised crime.
