Julian Bray writes: Very sorry to hear of the death after a short illness of Ian Rufus, one of the pioneers of commercial talk news radio, LBC in London and then went on to hold down senior management positions in a variety of stations and top radio groups throughout the UK.
This interview by David Lloyd recorded just a few weeks ago, is a fascinating romp through his career, and that of UK commercial radio.
I worked with Ian briefly during the very, very early days of LBC/IRN. It was long before micro computers and mobile phones were around.
This also pre-dated Capital Radio by a few weeks. Ian had a dry sense of humour, knowing the upstart Capital (under the direction of a Mr Ron Onions) was also at that time running a newsroom and that both stations were operating radio cars on the same frequencies; we knew Capital Radio journos were listening in to LBC/IRN off transmission chatter, so we'd set up a string of false trails, sending the Capital Radio car racing to the wrong side of town, while we filed our live reports... Happy days.
Condolences to Ians' family and friends.
